Macross Frontier marks the 25th anniversary of the Macross anime franchise. It is a direct sequel to Macross 7 and follows the lives of Saotome Alto, Ranka Lee and a Pop Idol named Sheryl Nome on board the new space ship Macross Frontier. Human kind after the war against the Zentradi have spread across the universe in order to maintain humanity through the use of new space ships called the Macross Frontier in a effort to spread and maintain the culture of humanity.

Ten years ago, an inscrutable and abnormal territory known as Hell's Gate appeared in Tokyo and altered the sky and wreaked havoc on the landscape. The heavenly bodies disappeared, replaced by false stars. During this time, people who possess various special abilities emerged. Kept secret from the knowledge of the masses, these individuals, known as Contractors, are able to murder in cold blood. Various nations around the world use Contractors as spies and agents, often resulting in violent battles for information. Each fake star has a corresponding contractor, and they vibrate when their contractor's power is being used. As such, contractors are usually identified by their star's Messier catalogue number. However, their abilities are gained at the edge of their humanity. They are implied to lack human emotions which includes no aversions to murder, and they are regarded as extremely rational and logical in their decision making. Contractors are thus named because of their need to always complete a remuneration or payment each time their power is used (ie. eating flowers, breaking fingers, drinking blood). Contractors usually work for one of various rival Organizations as spies and assassins.

Metropolis

In a retro-future world the center of technology and power is the city of Metropolis. But within this utopia is unrest between the rich who run the city and the poor who live below its surface and whose jobs have been taken by countless robots. The powerful Duke Red, however, looks outward--to control not just Metropolis, but the world. To do this, he needs a secretly constructed robot, Tima. But when his adopted son Rock, distrustful of robots, tries to destroy her, she ends up lost in the slums beneath the city, with only the young Kenichi as her guide. Meanwhile, Kenichi's uncle Shunsaku Ban, a private investigator, is busy trying to figure out just what kind of plots are afoot in this mechanized city.
